In a first day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” America's largest city, declaring “a different age” and an audacious start to his term.

A Historic Leader

The young democratic socialist, who was a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He additionally marked a milestone by being the first to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Ignoring suggestions to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of small expectations. Beginning today we will lead boldly and broadly.”

Adhering to Democratic Socialist Ideals

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my ideals for concern of being called radical,” he said to an enthusiastic response.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, beginning with a midnight oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who praised Mamdani's rise as a victory over political establishments.

A Sweeping Platform

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Subsidized daycare
• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these services may prove difficult to finance. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a city subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Challenges

The new mayor will deal with concern from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide stepped down over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was described as surprisingly friendly.

The Fundamental Challenges of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their ability in delivering basic services: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, fixing roadways, and making sure smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his administration's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
