Crew Member Discloses Depression After Wave of Online Abuse After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a historic all-female space mission.

Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also carried well-known figures.

The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I told her my depression might last for years,” the astronaut shared in a public message, recalling a supportive conversation from a mission companion in the days following the flight.

She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has focused her career on gynecological science and performed experiments during the flight, said everything she had worked for – including her studies and years of training to the personal milestone of her roots – was buried under the deluge of sexist vitriol.

She is most acclaimed for her groundbreaking advocacy championing the cause of sexual assault survivors.

Her own goal of reaching space was deferred after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

Finding Solid Ground

Now, eight months after achieving her goal, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she thanked the supporters whose kindness helped save her. “You were my salvation,” she wrote.

She noted that amid the criticism, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the flight, such as increased focus on her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

The self-operating New Shepard rocket launched from its launch site in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that exceeded the edge of space.
