Blues Manager Maresca Dismisses Man City Links as Pure Gossip
Chelsea gaffer Enzo Maresca has branded recent talk connecting him with a move to Manchester City as nothing but hearsay.
The Italian manager, who once served as Pep Guardiola's assistant in Manchester, addressed the ongoing speculation about his future.
Maresca, appointed Chelsea boss in the summer of 2024, is under contract that runs through the end of the decade, with a potential extra year available.
"It doesn't affect me at all because I know that is 100% speculation," Maresca said. "And at this moment, there is little room for such distractions."
He went on to explain, "First of all, because I have a contract here for several more years. And my focus, I have stated many times, is just about this club and I'm honoured to be here. But again, it's rumour. One week ago I was linked with Juventus in Italy. So I ignore it because I know that is not true."
Chelsea, presently placed in fourth position in the top flight, are scheduled to face Newcastle United on Saturday in a 12:30 GMT fixture.
Tensions Following Recent Remarks
Maresca's latest statement follow in the wake of he referred to a recent two-day spell as his "worst" since joining Chelsea.
Those initial words had fueled considerable talk of a potential rift between the coach and the club's key decision-makers.
When pressed if he had discussed matters with the Chelsea's sporting directors, Maresca replied, "We are in the same facility, so we speak about various topics. But about the Everton media session, no."
The Italian did confirm he would "absolutely" remain at the club for the coming campaign and called on supporters to "continue to support the team".
In brighter news, Maresca revealed that injured attackers Liam Delap and Estevao Willian could be back sooner than expected, possibly in contention for a match against Aston Villa on 27 December.
Analysis: Unresolved Tension
The perceived disconnect between Maresca and the club's hierarchy persists as an unhealed issue that still cause concern.
While there has been no further escalation of the matter publicly, there has also been no apology forthcoming, leaving the disagreement unresolved.
The atmosphere during these press conferences has grown notably strained, raising fears it could impact what has otherwise been a decent beginning to the campaign.
Chelsea's on-field position is strong: they are fourth in the Premier League, have qualified for the League Cup semi-finals, and can achieve a favourable European draw with good performances in their remaining games.
The lingering uncertainty is whether this behind-the-scenes dynamic might eventually affect a team that was beginning to look cohesive.
